The weakness of a laser distance measure is that a dot on a far wall tells you very little about what the beam clipped on the way there, and a reading off a door casing instead of the wall behind it is wrong in a way that looks right. The T1R Range shows a green line along the beam path as well as the dot, so the whole run is visible before the reading is taken and you can see exactly what it landed on.

A room being tiled is measured across the floor, large format tile laid and a bucket standing to one side. A green line runs along the length of the room at floor level with a red dot landing on the far wall, and the tool is moved so the line tracks across. The display is read once the line is sitting where it is wanted.
