A rough opening is measured before anything is trimmed out, which means no finished edge to hook and nobody to hold the far end of a blade that wants to fold. The T1M Utility stands the blade up off the sill and reads at the tool, so height comes off the header without a second pair of hands. Getting it right at framing is what stops a unit arriving that has to be shimmed out of square to fit.

A window rough opening in a timber-framed wall is measured with the blade stood straight up from the sill to the header, dark sheathing behind the studs. The tool is then laid along the horizontal member for the width. The blade is never bent into a corner and nothing is held at the far end.
