How do you measure the height of a stairwell?

A stairwell is the one dimension in a house you cannot run a tape up: there is nothing to hook at the top, nowhere safe to stand halfway, and a blade that long folds under its own weight. A staircase mid-renovation is measured, bare treads and stringers exposed with underlayment over the landing. The tool is aimed steeply upward along the flight and a green line runs up toward the ceiling above the stairs, the display reading in the low hundreds. No tape is extended up the stairwell and nobody stands on the flight to hold anything.
