The reasonable worry about a digital tape is that the electronics are a fragile layer bolted onto a simple tool. Opening a T1 Tomahawk shows the opposite: a standard spool and return spring with an encoder reading the blade, the board, display and laser packaged around them. It still behaves like a tape because underneath it still is one.
