Window and storefront work is full of dimensions that start at a surface no hook can grab: a stop, a sill return, a glazing pocket. The paddle on the back of the T1R Range folds out as a reference face, so zero moves to the back of the tool and the reading is taken by pressing the body against the surface. No case length added in your head and no hook hanging on nothing. The dimension saves as taken, which is what keeps a takeoff sheet clean.

The video pops the paddle out on a bench, shows the display change over, then takes the tool to a window frame and reads into the pocket by pressing the back of the case against the stop. The reading comes up at 28 and change with nothing hooked on anything. Reaching into a rabbet with a hook is where guessing usually starts.
