A diagonal brace gives you nowhere to rest a tape and nothing to hook onto square, so one hand ends up holding the blade against the timber while the other tries to read a number upside down. The T1 Tomahawk is read at the tool rather than at the far end, and the reading is captured with a click, so the whole measurement is taken from the hand already on the tool. The figure is saved before the tape comes off the work.
