How does a digital tape measure actually read the blade?

A tool that reports a number instead of showing you a graduation has to earn that trust, and the answer is worth knowing before you hand one to a crew. The T1 Tomahawk does not count clicks or roll a wheel along the blade. The underside of the blade carries a printed pattern where every position is uniquely encoded, and a reader module in the case scans it optically as the blade passes. There is no zero to drift and nothing mechanical to wear into an error.
How the reading is produced

The video takes the blade apart visually: the columns printed on the underside are read like a barcode, each row uniquely encoded to one exact position, scanned by a row of LEDs on one side of the reader module and photodiodes on the other. The on-screen figure at the end is the one that matters — plus or minus 1/32 inch, 0.50 mm.
