Buying a measuring tool sight unseen leaves one question open: what actually turns up, and does it work out of the box. The T1M Utility ships as a complete kit rather than a bare tool, with the removable reference square for marking square lines and the pencil holder in the body so the pencil is with the tape instead of behind your ear. It powers up into its own menus, so the units and the modes are set before it leaves the bench.

The box is opened and the T1M is lifted out with a printed card, then powered on. The display steps through its setup menus while the settings are worked through. The removable square is shown separate from the body, and a yellow carpenter's pencil is slid into the holder on the tool itself.
