Half the things you measure from have no edge for a hook: a slab, a drain cover, a panel face, a finished sill. The T1M Utility's square pulls off the base and gives a flat reference you set deliberately, so the reading starts where you put it rather than wherever the hook happened to catch. It is the difference between a measurement and an approximation.
