Long extrusion is where tape-and-mark breaks down: the stock outruns the bench, the blade sags in the middle and the mark ends up somewhere other than where you read it. The M1 Caliber measures the stock as it slides along the fence, so a sixty-five inch part is dialled in on the readout rather than transferred from a blade. Blade width is compensated automatically, which is what keeps a long run of parts matching each other end to end.

A long aluminium extrusion is cut on a miter saw with the M1 Caliber and a rail-mounted cut hub carrying the stock. The zero position is set against the carbide blade and the extrusion is slid down the rail to sixty-five inches before the cut is made. No tape is laid along the profile at any point.
