How do you measure a door slab to order a replacement?

Replacing a door means measuring the door, not the opening, because the slab already accounts for the hinge gaps and the sweep the frame was hung to. Height, width and thickness all have to come off the leaf itself, and a slab on its hinges gives you nothing flat to work against. An existing flush door with a round knob is measured on its hinges. The blade is run across the face and along the edge, the display stepping through readings from seven and three-quarters up to seventy-one and a quarter as height, width and thickness are taken. A conventional yellow tape sits nearby and is picked up for comparison at the end.
