A laser is powerful, but it isn't a do-everything replacement — and it's worth knowing where it falls short before you rely on one:

  • Reflective and glass surfaces can scatter the beam and throw off readings.
  • Bright sunlight washes out the laser dot, making it hard to aim outdoors.
  • Very short distances are awkward — lasers are happiest across a room, not across a workpiece.
  • It needs a surface to bounce off. You can't shoot a laser to measure a 2x4 you're about to cut.
  • It needs power. A dead battery is a dead tool.
