Composite boards are too expensive to cut twice and too consistent to fudge, so where the run starts and where each seam falls has to be worked out on the frame before anything is fastened down. The T1 Tomahawk reads at the tool and holds each figure, so positions can be taken along the joists and compared without a pencil mark on a finished face. The list is the layout the fastening then follows.

Composite deck boards are measured where they sit on a dark joist frame, gravel visible through the gaps below. The tape is laid along the boards and across the open joists in turn, and readings are taken at successive positions along the run. Nothing is marked on the face of the composite.
